Are you aware?

By aidsconnect - Posted on 22 June 2009

Native Americans rank third in the U.S. in rates of HIV/AIDS, compared to all other races and ethnicities. Not only are Natives not getting tested, but many are often racially misclassified, making research difficult for programs and health officials trying to truly understand the impact of HIV/AIDS on Natives Americans. There is even less known about the rates of HIV/AIDS on urban Native Americans. There is also much diversity within the Native community. There are 562 federally recognized tribes, and more than half of these populations live in urban areas.

American Indian Health Service of Chicago has started a program that is geared toward raising awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS on our Native community. Our goal is to encourage more Native Americans to get tested as well as spreading knowledge about prevention methods.
