Health Care Stories: Dependent On A Broken System

By lbrian21 - Posted on 23 October 2009

Simon’s story is, unfortunately, a common one in America:  Unable to keep what little health care is available to him.  This cycle keeps hard-working Americans out of work and dependent on a system that cannot meet their medical or financial needs.  By offering an alternative public health care option that caps out-of-pocket expenses and provides high-quality, affordable care, we can give people like Simon the chance at earning a living and having a fulfilling life with no options for health care coverage.

“I am a long-term survivor of the AIDS pandemic and 10 years ago became permanently disabled by side-effects from [a prescribed drug], one of the drugs that saved my life. I have to fight excruciating pain every second of every minute of every hour of every day. Since I had to leave work, my healthcare has been harder and harder to get. I was the Senior Software Engineer at a large genetics company and now I am lucky to have $40 left at the end of the month. My ‘finances’ have been ruined by unpaid lab fees. If I were to work, I would loose the private disability income I get now. I would never get hired because I'm too much a risk.”
