Health Care Stories: Inadequate Coverage Options Leave Many Behind

By lbrian21 - Posted on 23 October 2009

Due to the lack of a viable, public-interest alternative, private health insurers have taken advantage of the sick and unemployed.  Whether on COBRA or just too ill to go without care, Americans are forced to pay the high premiums and out-of-pocket expenses associated with private coverage, or to go without it.  And with the inadequate coverage options currently offered through the state, most Americans don’t have the choice they need among quality health care providers.  That’s why offering an affordable, high-quality public insurance option will give Americans the freedom to choose between coverage options without having to worry about making rent or buy groceries at the expense of their health.

“I've been living with HIV for the past ten years. On the year that I was diagnosed, I was working and had health insurance coverage through my employer. Soon after I had to leave my job because I became ill. This meant no insurance coverage and consequently, no medical care. As a result, I had to seek medical care from [a free clinic] in Chicago. This scenario has occurred time and time again with gaps in my medical care. I recently lost my job and before seeking care at the free clinic again, I tried to apply for COBRA only to learn once more that I can't afford the payments. I would appreciate healthcare reform that takes into consideration folks living with HIV, who like me are trying to live healthy and productive lives. However, the system that we have now has a gap which I am in. I am too healthy for public entitlements, which I really would rather not have. [Yet] I am too wealthy as well, (I earn a whole 800.00 per month through my current employment.).”
