Health Care Stories: Veteran Seeks Comprehensive Care

Because of the high cost associated with specialized health care such as optometry, dermatology or dental, many insurance plans do not cover these treatments.  However important, out-of-pocket expenses for these treatments are often too high to afford, let alone receive on a regular basis if necessary.  Americans with chronic diseases, including HIV/AIDS, need access to comprehensive, affordable dental and other coverage as a part of health care reform. 

“I am fortunate in that I served my country with honor and they have offered me health care.  The issue I am facing now is that with changes, I am no longer covered for dental care through any VA health facility.  I then applied for Medicaid dental and until a month ago was covered [but] now I have no coverage at all...As you know, proper and good dental hygiene is essential for good health.  I cannot afford to pay for such bills as I am so deep in debt as it is.  Explain to me how it is possible for our trusted, elected officials to get the best care yet I am denied such care because of all the loopholes?”
