Health Care Stories: "When Will Congress Get It?"
Like Scott, many Americans are dependent on employer-based plans for health care coverage. In this turbulent economy however, there is little assurance for long-term insurance coverage and few can afford private coverage from the open market if employer-based coverage ends. What security is available to ensure you and your family are covered if economic circumstances in your household change? No one should go without coverage because they can’t afford it. Contact your senators and representatives and tell them you support a public insurance option and adequate subsidies for middle-class Americans to purchase insurance on the private market.
“I am a 52 years old…my pension is $1000 per month [and] my medical plan is $600 per month. If my former employer fails, who will insure me at 52 years old plus? It’s a long way to Medicare. And that $400 to live on…yeah, that works well. So well that I’ve taken a new <thank God> 32 hour per week job to have some [money] to live on. It’s a 3 hour round trip commute, however. When will Congress get it that we all need healthcare security for life?”
