Help Paint an AIDS Awareness Mural

By WithMeComesACure - Posted on 16 April 2010

Public art cannot only beautify, but enlighten. That’s why the AIDS Foundation of Chicago teamed with artists, business owners and community organizations to create an AIDS awareness mural in Austin, a West Side neighborhood disproportionately impacted by HIV.

The mural project was inspired by “With Me Comes A Cure,” a public awareness campaign designed primarily to address the growing HIV epidemic among African Americans and stress the importance of developing an AIDS vaccine.

Designed by artist Carla Carr, the 15’ x 30’ mural entitled “A.I.D.S. – Austin Is Doing Something,” will be located on the northeast corner of West Chicago and North Mayfield avenues, a few doors down from the Sankofa Cultural Arts and Business Center (5820 W. Chicago Avenue).

Mural artists will begin painting on Saturday April 17, 2010 and continue on Saturday, April 24 and Sunday, April 25. If you’re interested in volunteering for the project, please call or e-mail Johnathon Briggs at: 312-334-0922; jbriggs@aidschicago.org

The mural project is made possible by the generosity of the following sponsors: the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, Citizens to Elect Deborah L. Graham, Congressman Danny K. Davis, Critical Massive, Friends of Don Harmon, Malcolm and Stacia Crawford, The Office LLC, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases HIV Vaccine Research and Education Initiative.
