HIV: Hey, It's Viral!

This innovative youth-produced video uses a sex-positive and LGBTQ-inclusive educational approach as a practical alternative to abstinence-only education. The voices of HIV positive urban youth encourage their peers to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS through safter-sex practices and activism.

The video resulted from a workshop that took place in the summer of 2007 entitled "HIV: Histories in Voices." The workshop brought together 20 LGBTQ youth every day for two weeks, and engaged them in a dialogue about the myths and facts about HIV/AIDS. The youth involved were able to create a safe space in order to disseminate the stereotypes around HIV/AIDS often perpetuated in popular culture. Using video and theater, they were able to dissect the misinformation that was handed down to them from previous generations in an effort to spread truthful messages to future generations.
