Local Reactions to the National HIV/AIDS Strategy

By Pistol Pete - Posted on 13 July 2010

"The release of the National AIDS Strategy (NAS) can be used as an opportunity to raise awareness regarding prevention and access to care. In Chicago, African Americans are disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS. Applying the tenets of the NAS locally can ensure that funds are redirected to specific Chicago geographic areas and specific targeted populations, specifically to gay men of color, women and the reentry population."

"I am ecstatic to witness the actualization of a National AIDS Strategy. I know firsthand that many of my colleagues have invested a great deal of time and energy into bringing this day to fruition. While I am particularly grateful that African American gay and bisexual men are recognized as a priority within the Strategy, I reserve some skepticism regarding the emphasis of potential programming. It is my hope that this Strategy will explore and focus more on making necessary corrections to the institutional structures that deliver services to this population, rather than continuing to demonize us."
