Sweet Miss Giving's Transitional Job Program

By aidsconnect - Posted on 02 July 2009

Sweet Miss Giving's is a gourmet bakery and social enterprise. At Sweet Miss Giving's we aim to provide low-income and disabled individuals with the skills they need to re-enter the workforce. Our program is focused mainly on the customer service and food and beverage industries, and starts with a six-week unpaid classroom course.

During this six weeks interns are taught the basics of the kitchen including knife skills, safety and sanitation, and basic baking measurements. Participants are also trained in customer service and delivery, and will have multiple opportunities to shadow current employees in whichever area they are interested in. After six-weeks, participants are then fully integrated into the bakery as Sweet Miss Giving's "interns". Interns are paid $8/hour and can specialize in baking, packaging and assembly, or customer service/delivery. Cross-training is also available.

During the six-month internship, interns work side-by-side with professional bakers and pastry chefs from across Chicago, and are able to participate in day long internships at other bakeries and kitchens with whom we partner. At the end of this seven and a half month journey, staff members of Chicago House's iFOUR Employment Program provide interns with support and guidance in their job search.

Sweet Miss Giving's is a wonderful opportunity for the right individual. Participants are treated as regular staff members, and must show appropriate dedication and enthusiasm. If you think that you know a client who would benefit from this training program then please call Lucy Witt at 773-305-0705 as soon as possible.

To apply for Sweet Miss Giving's clients must complete this application, provide a recommendation letter from a case manager or career specialist, submit a resume and cover letter, as well as pass a TABE test showing that they can read and do math problems at at least a sixth grade level. All of this must be completed by July 24th, as we are hoping to conduct interviews with qualified candidates the week of July 27th. The six-week classroom course will begin in early August.
