Take Action: Prevent Cuts in State HIV Funding

By aidsconnect - Posted on 23 April 2009

Over the next six weeks, the Illinois General Assembly will decide how to close a $12 billion deficit.  Governor Quinn’s proposed budget appropriates $630,000 less for essential HIV-related care, housing, and prevention programs. A funding reduction of this size will deeply hinder HIV/AIDS services in Illinois.

An estimated 44,000 Illinoisans are living with HIV/AIDS, and each year 3,000 more individuals become infected with HIV in Illinois.  With more residents needing the AIDS Drug Assistance Program for life-saving HIV prescriptions—and more people relying on HIV-related services than ever before—now is not the time to weaken our response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Tell your state legislators to make sure adequate funding is appropriated in the budget to reverse the proposed funding cuts and secure services for people with and at risk for HIV/AIDS. Your legislators need to know that HIV prevention and care matter to you.
