Tell Gov Quinn to reject Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage programs!

By aidsconnect - Posted on 22 May 2009

On May 20, 2009 the Student Advisory Council told the Illinois State Board of Education that they want comprehensive sexual health education in the public schools.  They told the Board that Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage programs don't work.

Studies prove that the AOUM experiment has failed: AOUM programs have been shown to have no effect on the sexual abstinence of youth.  AOUM programs fail to give youth the factual information they need to make responsible decisions and keep themselves safe.  President Barack Obama has recognized this fact.  He has moved to reject these programs in favor of comprehensive sexual health education.

It's time for Governor Pat Quinn to stand up for our youth!  He needs to move the State of Illinois forward with comprehensive sex ed.  The first step is to reject the federal AOUM funding.

In his FY 2010 budget proposal, Quinn included continued federal funding for AOUM programs.

We must tell him to reverse this decision!

Please urge Governor Quinn to stop throwing good money after bad. Tell him to reject funding for Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage programs.
