About the Emergency Network
In 2007 a large, diverse, and powerful coalition of over 70 organizations and elected officials came together to form the Emergency Network to Save Cook County Health Services. Our goals were to:
- Restore availability and access to high quality health services provided by the Cook County Bureau of Health, including the focus on community prevention and early intervention
- Assure adequate funding to maintain service levels and expand services as demand increases
- Improve efficiency in the governance and provision of services
We asked that the members of the Cook County Board come together to show courage and thoughtful leadership by passing an ordinance to establish an Emergency Trusteeship which was to be the blueprint for restoring faith and public trust in the Cook County healthcare system. The Cook County Health Systems Board has now been at work for over a year. The Board has hired a new CEO, William Foley, who hired a new team of professionals to run the Cook County Health System. A new strategic plan for the future of the system was also released.
As Cook County is first and foremost a public system, and not a corporation or a private hospital system, the "Emergency Network" will continue to be the "public voice" which will ensure the integrity of maintaining and growing this vital public health system.
