Prevention Specialist - MSM
Job Summary:
The prevention specialist is responsible for managing deliverables as outlined in HIV prevention grants, particularly in the City of Chicago. Such services include individual, group and/or community level education/training focusing on HIV/STD prevention education and development of skills and resources. The Prevention Specialist will also conduct HIV/STD risk-reduction counseling and HIV-antibody testing activities within the community.
Primary Duties:
- Assist in the implementation of the risk reduction counseling and HIV-antibody testing program to MSM (men who have sex with men), which includes administering oral, rapid and/or blood testing, as well handling/transporting specimens
- Implement age and culturally appropriate prevention skills-building and/or group level intervention sessions.
- Conduct outreach events and education presentations as appropriate to the goals and objectives of the Prevention program.
o Complete reporting requirements as assigned.
o Participate in staff meetings and complete trainings as determined by the Prevention Manager.
o Collaborate with key community stakeholders
o Maintain the confidentiality and privacy of clients
o Other duties as assigned by the Prevention Manager or the Director of Client Services.
Position Requirements:
o Preferred college/university degree (or enrollment in post-secondary education). Candidates with 3 or more years of HIV/AIDS and/or other community outreach/education leadership experience will also be considered.
o Background and/or willingness to work with men who have sex with men
o Ability to work independently and have basic critical thinking skills (
o Strong verbal communication skills
o Reliable transportation
o Have knowledge and sensitivity about the needs / issues of various subpopulations such as people of color and the LGBT community
o Willingness to work non-traditional hours
